Diary of a new lion cub…
Hello! My name is Nikhil Miller and I’m nuvemXP’s summer intern. Here are the 5 lessons I’ve learned through the first 5 days of my first corporate job.
Communication is a skill that is practiced and improved
When working in a team that is very connected and in touch with one another, strong communication is very important. I understand now that communication is a skill just like juggling a soccer ball and that unfortunately, I’ll need to practice this one a bit more.
There is so so SO much to learn
To be completely honest, I always thought that most professional jobs were, while hard, easy enough to pick up with the help of Google and AI (overconfident much?). This has definitely not been the case with sales. I realize now how steep of a learning curve there is to simply understanding the basics of sales, particularly with selling Sage Intacct.
Sales is nothing like the movies
I’ve learned that “sales” at nuvemXP is nothing like in Wolf of Wall Street or other movies, with Jordan Belfort completely misleading clients, with value being way overpromised and under-delivered. It’s actually more similar to a conversation, where we discuss whether or not Sage Intacct would actually help a client’s business and if nuvemXP’s culture fits with the clients.
If I were to describe our sales approach in a few words, I’d say nuvemXP is okay with saying no to a bad fit if we know that Sage Intacct or our cultures would not be a good fit. nuvemXP’s focus is not on contracts, but providing genuine value.
Business is a relationship game
This is a bit of a classic. “It’s not about what you know but about who you know”. I’ve watched as Ron and Guilherme build relationships, whether with our clients, with Sage, or internally. These relationships are so important to nuvemXP’s success and longevity in such a competitive industry like SaaS sales.
There are levels to this
This is the most important lesson I’ve learned. People are so talented and very skilled at their jobs. I honestly felt that with my experience in other roles and what I’d learned at university, I would be able to relatively quickly work alongside the team at nuvemXP, but obviously I misjudged this. It’s honestly inspiring to know how much room for growth there is in this opportunity at nuvemXP (but also a bit daunting, I won’t lie).
Overall, with 5 days under my belt, I’d say the biggest thing I now know is how little I know. That is slightly weird to say, given that I’m meant to be learning and I am, but as I learn more and more, I realize how much more there is that I don’t understand. However, I’m not looking at this like a negative, I’m excited to see where I am as the summer unfolds! Stay tuned for more…! .
